“I have experienced the arts through a kaleidoscope that will only continue to enrich itself through unique opportunities. Professor Foley has taught me that opportunities can only turn into realities if you make something of them.”
–Emily Navarro ’09, Dance Studies
A USF chemical engineer/water filtration expert who mentors students in Canada and Mexico is asked to share her ideas at a meeting in Bangladesh. A USF professor of jazz studies receives a Guggenheim Fellowship, one of the most prestigious academic awards in the world. A paper written by a USF anthropology graduate student is chosen over hundreds of others and awarded for its excellence by the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of Higher Education and Princess Astrid of Belgium. A nationally recognized, Yale University-educated authority on intensive care for premature babies comes to USF to lead its neonatology program.
USF people make USF unstoppable. In every department, the nation’s—and often the world’s—most productive researchers are innovating new technologies and testing new ideas. More than 46,000 students at four distinct institutions are bringing their dreams with them as they acquire the skills and understanding to become tomorrow’s successful leaders in their professions and their communities. Thanks to the remarkable programs developed by our Division of Student Affairs, virtually every USF student is involved in co-curricular learning opportunities ranging from public service to student government.
As one of the largest universities in the United States, USF is responsible for changing thousands of lives for the better through its faculty and students.

Service-Minded Engineers
Civil and environmental engineering graduate students at USF studying with James Mihelcic, professor of environmental engineering, are blending their expertise and desire to serve to make a difference around the world. In addition to taking classes at USF, students spend two years in the Peace Corps solving engineering problems for communities in the third world while also conducting research projects. When they return, they publish the results of their projects and emerge as engineers who can effect positive change.

The Intellect and
Art of DanceMichael Foley, USF assistant professor and internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer, says dance is much more than having a flexible and healthy body. While on a Fulbright Scholarship in Mazatlan, Mexico, Foley worked with one of that country’s most celebrated modern dance companies and promoted the discipline he instills in students back home. They must be “intellectually curious and able to collaborate, articulate their opinions clearly and contribute to growth of the art form.”

Major Productivity
for St. Petersburg Undergraduates
According to James McHale, professor and chair of psychology at USF St. Petersburg, he couldn’t do his research without the talented undergraduate “research partners” in his department. McHale’s research focuses on the effects of co-parenting on children up to three years old. In only four years, his students have presented more than 20 scientific reports at conferences in the U.S. and Canada.
