For nearly half a century, WUSF Public Broadcasting has been enhancing the intellectual lives of countless listeners and viewers throughout the Tampa Bay region. Through a combination of local, national and international news, insightful educational programs and world-class music, WUSF has become an integral part of daily life. With the support of its loyal members, WUSF has become unstoppable in its ability to expose its audience to the many wonders of art, culture and new ideas.
WUSF’s mission is to provide meaningful and relevant content that improves our collective quality of life. Its vision is to become the first choice media destination for information, entertainment and education. To fulfill its mission and realize its vision, WUSF enters the USF: Unstoppable Campaign ready to expand its many public service opportunities, add to its high-quality programming and strengthen its endowment.
Expanding Public Service
Support Florida Matters. Florida Matters is WUSF’s public affairs program that explores issues of interest to the community as determined by research conducted by the station. Featuring experts, decision-makers and informed citizens, Florida Matters is designed to stimulate conversation and advance discussion of topics important to the community. By supporting this popular program, you will be enabling many more people to enjoy and benefit from its topical content.
Support Florida Stories. Florida Stories is an oral-history project presenting unique and compelling narratives as told by the people who lived them. These are colorful stories of hope and inspiration, fear and triumph, laughter and tears—intimate conversations between the storyteller and a friend or family member, who are assisted by trained facilitators during the recording process. Florida Stories brings to life personal conversations between people who are part of each other’s lives and strengthens our sense of belonging, history and place as Floridians.
With additional funding, WUSF will capture and preserve for future generations the stories of past generations: the veterans who defended our country, the innovative entrepeneurs, creative artists, public officials and volunteers. Their personal stories of Florida living have memorably impacted their lives and ours and are worth preserving.
Conversion to High Definition TV. WUSF must completely renovate its studios to accommodate all facets of high definition technology. This will provide the very best broadcast quality available to our community and enable our students to learn and develop their talents on state-of-the-art equipment, which is critical to their success after graduation.
In addition, an extensive upgrade of the current digital broadcast equipment will be required to permit the broadcast of high definition programming into homes.
Creating More Content
Establish a Radio and Television Studio in Sarasota. WUSF would like to build state-of-the-art studios on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. This would provide significant opportunities for USF students and departments in the Sarasota area and would allow WUSF to broadcast relevant content from the region.
Mobile Broadcast Unit. A state-of-the-art mobile broadcast unit will provide WUSF the freedom to broadcast and record live music performances and other events outside of the Tampa studios, increasing WUSF’s coverage and impact throughout the region.
Endow to Endure
WUSF seeks to build a strong and growing endowment that will ensure public broadcasting’s presence in our community.WUSF offers a wide variety of endowment opportunities, including Endow a Day and the endowment of music hosts and news reporter positions. Funding opportunities begin at $25,000.
