Tampa, FL (May 10, 2007) – The University of South Florida proudly announces the student recipients of four prestigious and highly sought-after scholarships, three from the Fulbright Program and one from the National Security Education Program.

Fulbright Research Scholarships were awarded to Elizabeth Cooper and Kendrick Hornack.  Cooper, who comes from Darlington, S.C., has a master’s degree in public health from USF where she specialized in global health practice and is a Ph.D. candidate in applied anthropology at USF’s College of Arts and Sciences.  She will use the Fulbright to complete dissertation work within Sarawak state, non-peninsular Malaysia (Borneo) and to research nationalism, local nutritional programming, international health policy and their interrelations.

Hornack, who holds a bachelor’s degree from USF Honors College and the College of Business Administration, will conduct research in Germany on the impact of the Euro on the German economy. She is the first USF College of Business Administration student to be awarded a Fulbright research grant. Her home is in Missouri.

Margeaux Chavez, who earned a bachelor’s degree in world languages and linguistics from the USF College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded a Fulbright Teaching Scholarship to study in Germany.  Her area of expertise is German language and literature.  She comes from Lutz, Florida.

A National Security Education Program Boren Scholarship was awarded to Chad Cullen.  He graduated from USF Honors College and the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in International Studies.  He heads to Thailand for an intensive Thai course at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok from May 2007 to July 2008.  His hometown is Tampa.

“These are all highly competitive scholarships,” said International Affairs Dean María de los Angeles Crummett.  “Having served as a panel reviewer on several occasions for NSEP Boren fellowships, I know that the competition is particularly fierce.  We are very proud of each of them.”

The University of South Florida is one of the nation’s top 63 public research universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
