USF World's Second-in-Command

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2009) – The University of South Florida is pleased to announce the appointment of Roger Brindley, as interim associate director of the new USF World initiative and the Patel Center for Global Solutions. He formerly served as chair of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies and as director of the SunCoast Area Teacher Training (SCATT) Honors Program in the USF College of Education.

Brindley will be a member of the leadership team for the overall USF World program and the Patel Center as well as chair the Confucius Institute Oversight Committee.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Brindley’s experience and passion to help us in our efforts to formulate the best model for global strategies at USF,” said Donna Petersen, interim executive director of USF World and of the Patel Center for Global Solutions. “Our team will be working with all sectors of the University community and the community at large to generate the best ideas for structure, function and leadership responsibilities in support of our international agenda. Roger’s knowledge of these communities and his dedication to this effort will make him an invaluable member of this team.” Petersen also is dean of the USF College of Public Health.

Launched in early August, USF World is in its first stages of being readied to support the university’s strategic plan around global initiatives. Brindley will join Petersen in assessing the opportunities and existing assets for internationalizing USF. From there they will begin devising and recommending the necessary infrastructure, systems, policies and procedures that will form the program’s foundation.

"I am excited to assist both the tremendous global learning and research already in place and the new initiatives that will continue to extend the international reputation of USF," said Brindley.

Brindley’s research into university-school partnerships and pre-service teacher beliefs has been published in Teacher and Change (the journal of the NEA), Action in Teacher Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, and the Journal of Teacher Education. He presently serves as the Secretary for the National Association of Professional Development Schools and is a member of the review board for the Journal of Teacher Education. Brindley was identified as an “Honored Professor” by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in 2001. He has two teaching awards from the USF College of Education to his credit, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2000 and the USF President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in 2003.
