Hevner Receives Design Science Lifetime Achievement Award
TAMPA, Fla. (July 13, 2009) – Alan Hevner, professor in the College of Business, received the 2009 Design Science Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fourth International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology. The annual conference brings together researchers and practitioners in the design science field.
During the award ceremony on May 8, 2009, one of Hevner's former doctoral advisees, Dr. Monica Tremblay, presented a video featuring his career and accomplishments. In the video, Hevner’s colleagues shared their thoughts about working with him and congratulated him on the honor.
An Eminent Scholar in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department, Hevner also holds the Citigroup/Hidden River Chair of Distributed Technology. He teaches graduate courses in advanced software development, software architecture, and software testing. Hevner recently completed a two-year assignment as a program manager at the National Science Foundation in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate.
Emphasizing the synergy between teaching and research, Hevner's interests include information systems development, software engineering, distributed database systems, health care information systems, and service-oriented computing. He has co-authored chapters, books, and published 150+ papers on these topics. A significant number of his research contributions have been implemented and evaluated in business and industrial information systems.
Hevner earned bachelors, masters and PhD degrees from Purdue University. He joined USF's faculty in 1994 after serving on the faculties of the University of Maryland and University of Minnesota. A member of ACM, IEEE, AIS and INFORMS, Hevner serves as a senior editor on the editorial board of MIS Quarterly, the top-ranked research journal in the information systems field.
Robert Forsythe, dean of the College of Business, congratulated Hevner on the honor. "The entire college is very proud of Dr. Hevner for earning this prestigious award," Forsythe said. "Alan is one of the most productive researchers in the College of Business, evidenced not only by this award, but also by the more than 150 papers he’s published on health care information systems, information systems, software quality and metrics, and database warehouses. His many years of hard work in and dedication to design science have certainly made him deserving of such recognition."
