Iran Expert Featured in "Foreign Affairs"
TAMPA, Fla. (June 29, 2009) – As the election crisis in Iran continues to dominate international headlines, Mohsen Milani, chairman of the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida is providing important insights in an essay titled “Tehran’s Take” in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs, the country’s leading foreign policy journal, published by the Council on Foreign Relations. In it, he encourages a closer and more rational look at the logic behind Tehran’s foreign policy positions, and argues that Iran’s foreign policy is not made by “mad mullahs” but by “calculating ayatollahs.”
Milani has written over fifty articles and book chapters about the revolution of 1979 and Iran’s foreign and security policy. His book, The Making Of Iran's Islamic Revolution: From Monarchy To Islamic Republic, is required reading at universities in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Iran. He is an internationally recognized authority on Iran’s politics and its foreign policy as well as politics of the Persian Gulf region.
Sooner or later the election dispute will be resolved. The daunting challenge for the United States will remain Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a topic Milani has written about.
Milani has been a consultant to major think tanks as well as the U.S. government and he is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. Since the disputed presidential election in Iran, he is increasingly being called upon by national and international media outlets to comment on developments. He brings a perspective born of close study of Iran over two decades. He also has travelled to Iran on many occasions in recent years interviewing some of today’s key players and has an intimate knowledge of the internal politics of the country.
