TAMPA, Fla. (June 12, 2009) The University of South Florida and spinoff company TempTroll was singled out as one of the coolest technologies at coolTECH 2009 – a hip, cutting-edge tech show held June 11 in Tampa.

USF was the recipient of the Coolest Technology award in the STEM category (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) for its partnership with TempTroll, LLC, a USF spin-out that has developed self-heating washcloths. The RediWash® Self-Heating POCKETBATH® is the first and only fully  self-contained and self-heating bath-in-a-bag product. The washcloths are heated within the package to provide the user with warm washcloths for bathing when traditional bathing facilities are not available.  The product is ideal for use by hospitals, campers, hunters, military and more.

The product was developed in conjunction with graduate students and Aydin Sunol at USF’s Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. The project was supported by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council’s Matching Grants Research Program.

Hosted by Tampa Bay Technology Forum, coolTECH attracted more than 1,000 leaders from the technology and business community including industry professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and technology providers. The event featured different tech zones representing innovative technologies from a variety of sectors and award recipients were selected by text-voting attendees and a blue-ribbon judging panel.

The University of South Florida is one of the nation's top 63 public research universities and one of 39 community-engaged, four-year public universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF was awarded more than $360 million in research contracts and grants in FY 2007/2008. The university offers 219 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. The university has a $1.8 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.2 billion, and serves more than 46,000 students on institutions/campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.
