USF to Remember Lakdawala

Email article to a friendPrint Article

(TAMPA, Fla.) May 22, 2009 In recognition of the life, leadership and legacy of Aly Zain Lakdawala, a remembrance celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 6 p.m. in the Marshall Student Center, Oval Theatre.

On behalf of Lakdawala’s many friends, student organizations and the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement, all members of the USF community are invited to attend. Participants are asked to honor the Muslim tradition of wearing light-colored clothing. Attendees will have the opportunity to express their memories of Lakdawala by sharing videos and notes.

Lakdawala, 21, who graduated from USF on May 1, was with a group of USF students earlier this month working with the organization “International Volunteer HQ” in rural Costa Rica. The trip was part of USF’s alternative summer break program. Lakdawala was reported missing on Saturday, May 16 after a strong riptide caught some of the group swimming during a lunch break. His body was found on Tuesday, May 19 one nautical mile offshore close to where he had been swimming in the Pacific Ocean near Matapalo.

Lakdawala had been well-known at USF for his involvement in community service.
