USF Approved to Offer New Ph.D. Programs
TAMPA, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2009) The Florida Board of Governors has granted the University of South Florida approval to establish new doctoral programs in history, government, sociology and pharmacy.
The programs in history, government and sociology are linked, which is quite different from traditional, discipline-based programs. They focus on building sustainable healthy communities in a global context. Ranging from global security, to population growth and land-use development, to understanding the international financial crisis, the design of the programs ensures graduates will be uniquely qualified to meet the needs of a widening marketplace.
“Expanding USF’s doctoral-level programs is an investment in the future of the university, which is certainly no small feat given the state and national economic climate,” said USF President Judy Genshaft. “Together, they support integrated, interdisciplinary inquiry and will position USF to become the university of the future.”
USF’s existing resources of outstanding, interdisciplinary doctoral-level faculty, graduate assistants, and library resources already in place in each of these departments are ready to support the delivery of the new Ph.D. programs.
The PharmD Program will be housed under the auspices of the USF College of Medicine. The university expects to apply to the Florida Legislature for program funding by 2011, so that its first PharmD class could be admitted later that year.
Detailed information regarding all four program proposals can be found at the Florida Board of Governors website: http://www.flbog.org/pressroom/meeting_items.php?id=47&agenda=166
The University of South Florida is one of the nation's top 63 public research universities and one of 39 community-engaged, four-year public universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF was awarded more than $360 million in research contracts and grants in FY 2007/2008. The university offers 219 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. The university has a $1.8 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.2 billion, and serves more than 46,000 students on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.
